Anne Mimi Sammis - Home

For the past twelve years, I've hosted an artist circle in my home each Monday night from six to seven thirty.

Painters, sculptors, writers, dancers, musicians, singers and photographers find a haven and support for their creative process in this group setting.

Some people enter the group as accomplished artists, but many only have a sense that they would like to create. They may not even know what medium they want to gravitate to.

For me, the artist circle creates a community where my inner child feels safe, supported and free to celebrate creative endeavors. I've seen a reclusive cellist blossom into a confident improvisationalist who performs weekly, and a psychologist who took up writing, painting, and photography in less than one year feel totally liberated. This group is very flexible so people can come to the meetings when they wish, however, the important thing is that the meetings happen consistently each week.

The Format of Mimi's Artist Circle

Every Monday of the month (except the first Monday, see below) the format is as follows:

6:00pm - 6:10pm: Meditation - silent or guided meditation.

6:10pm - 6:40pm: Share time where each person shares uninterrupted.

  1. Share morning practice - this is a creative "sketch" done upon arising. It could be journal papers, a sketch, a dance, a song, or a photograph. Something quick and done without any expectation or judgments.
  2. Time in nature - we spend time in nature each day and share any particular insights or moments of enjoyment.
  3. Expect a miracle - we share the miracles of our week, big or small, such as running into just the right person when we needed help, answered prayer, or receiving the perfect insight.

6:40pm - 7:20pm: Read from an inspiring text or a book of creative quotes (for example Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way" or "Success Now! For Artists" by Renee Phillips). Suggestions are always welcome. Discuss the readings or quotes by going around in the circle with each person talking without interruptions.

7:20pm - 7:25pm: Each participant shares a goal for the coming week.

7:25pm - 7:30pm: Closing circle which includes a moment of silence, sending peace out to the world or a prayer of one's choice.

First Monday of the Month

The first Monday of the month is "Potluck Share Night" from five to seven-thirty where people bring something if they wish - a poem, a painting, a dance, a song, a photograph to share with the group. The format is as follows:

5:00pm - 5:45pm: Potluck
5:45pm - 7:20pm: Each person who cares to share their art with the rest of the group.
7:20pm - 7:25pm: Each participant shares a goal for the coming week.
7:25pm - 7:30pm: Closing circle which includes a moment of silence, sending peace out to the world or a prayer of one's choice.

Artist's Circle Testimonial

  • "About six years ago I was invited to join Mimi and her artist friends at her Monday evening Artists' Circle. These Monday evenings became a welcome, restorative, retreat from the emotionally charged and physically taxing days I was experiencing at that time. Meditation, contemplation, and reflection in and of this life not only healed me but made me believe that we are all artists within and lead me to acknowledge, discover, and share my own artistic nature. One evening I felt motivated to announce that I would try watercolor and share my artistic journey with this group of accepting and encouraging artists. The group empowered me to express myself and to share my feelings and insights. My heart opened and I was accepted as a member of the group. My opened heart encourages me to give to others so that their hearts might be opened, too. Thank you."
